How to type in Chinese

Post by Ling »

I'm trying to learn how to type in Chinese. I have some background in Simplified Chinese. Please advise what I have to turn on in Windows 2000 and Words 2000 to enable me to do do the typing. And also, after turn on those function, how do I start typing to make the Chinese Character show.

Thanks,
Ling

If you understand Pinyin you can download Microsoft Global IME (Input Method Editor) 5.02 for Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0.
you said your system is Windows 2000, before you download it you can read "System Requirements"-Note: the Global IMEs are not necessary or supported on Windows 2000 since that OS has full-featured East Asian input support built in. Please go to the Windows Control Panel, find the Regional Options applet and do the following:

1,In the General Tab, find the "Language Settings" area and add the language you wish to use. This should start a copy process - you'll need your Windows 2000 CD.
2,After the install has completed, select the "Input Locales" tab and then add your keyboard/IME to the active list.
3,Restart your system.

I think Win 2000 has Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0. This allows you to input in pinyin and if you fiddle about with the settings, you can alter the setting to display simplified or traditional characters.

Thanks for the response. I couldn't get the IME to work. I download the NJStar and it works great. Can I still use the NJStar after the trial period?

Yeah, NJStar is pretty good to use. However, folks ought to know it doesn't work with Win XP for input very well.

XP's been out for at almost 2 years now, and still no compatability! It should say somewhere on the njstar site someplace. However, it does have a useful "universal code converter".
