Is it true that the Chinese symbol for 'love' is a combination for those of 'mother' and 'child'? Does anyone have pictures of those three symbols?

No, the character you mean is the character hao3 好 which means good. The left side is a women , the right side a child. the symbol for love is ai4 爱
on this page you can see the origin of hao and other charcaters :

True, the character for nuu3 'female' plus the character for
zi3 'child' makes the character hao3 'good', but it also makes
the identical-looking character hao4 'to like'. The hao4 'to like'
usage and meaning is probably what Lorna confused with
'love' (which is another character, as you said).
