Anyone Know This Song?

Post by ahkiao »

Hi all,
First of all I would like to thank this community for this wonderful collection of knowledge on the minnan dialect. This is truly a wonderful community and a most helpful resource.

A quick background of me, Australian born to a Father who was born in Xiamen then moved in his teens to Singapore, and a mother of Hokchiew background. I'm able to converse in hokkien in basic and family matters, but not much out side of that (i see all these wonderful proverbs here that I can only make sense of with my dad reading beside me). I struggle to understand the varieties of hokkien outside of singaporean & e-mng (which to me share more similarities than any other branch of hokkien), and ciangciu (my grandpa's dialect). I guess then I would like to broaden my knowledge and understanding of all branches of hokkien, to be able to truly appreciate what a beautiful and rich language it is.

Now I dont know if this is an appropriate topic to come to this forum about, but I was wondering if anyone knew the name of this song

I tried typing a loose chinese character translation of some parts into google but to no avail. I feel its a wonderful song and so hope that someone is able to recognise or identify it please. And even if you're not able to, at least you were able to listen to (what i think is) a lovely song!

Thanks in Advance!

Hi, ahkiao,

Is an old song from 1980s’ but I forgot the title.
WIll update to you when i found out the title and singer next time.
I m glad You take keen interest to listen and learn Taiwanese Language song.
I would like to recommend a few songs very good Taiwanese Hokkien songs for you to enjoy as well as learn the beautiful language.

蔡幸娟 - 牽阮的手 khan gún ê tshiú (To Be Your Wife)(MV)

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02qfIv9 ... r_embedded

Lyrics:

牽阮的手淋著小雨
khan gún ê tshiú , lâm tio̍h sió hōo
牽阮的手綴你跤步
khan gún ê tshiú, tuè lí kha-pōo
牽你的手行咱的路
khan lí ê tshiú , kiânn lán ê lōo
牽你的手毋驚艱苦
khan lí ê tshiú , m̄-kiann kan-khóo

雖然路途有風有雨
sui-jiân lōo-tôo ū hong ū hōo
我也甘願受盡苦楚
guá iā kam-guān siū tsīn khóo-tshóo
希望佮你白頭偕老
hi-bāng kah lí pi̍k-thiô kai-nóo
牽阮的手行咱的路
khan gún ê tshiú kiânn lán ê lōo

Description of the song:

"甲你牽手" pronounce as "ga li kan-chiu" and means exactly "to hold your hand".
"一世人" means one's whole life.
As for the terms used to refer to one's wife, all except "thai-thai" were already in use before the Chinese mainlanders arrived in Taiwan after Japan's defeat in 1945-1949. The mainlanders introduced this particular term. It means that " will be together with you in your journey through life," which I think
can be translated to "甲你牽手一世人."
There are many Hoklo songs about "khan-chhiu".
The literal meaning of khan-chhiu is holding [your] hands.
In Taiwanese/Hoklo, it means "wife." The term is in commonly used by older generation.
There are several terms that are used to mean wife in Hoklo, such as "bóo,"
"thài-thài," "tsa-bóo-lâng," "ke-āu," among many others, but
"khan-chhiu" could be the one that is beautiful, and
has profounding meaning than just wife/ spouse.

ahkiao, hoan'gêng, hoan'gêng.

The song is a parody/spoof of "Ciúkok Enghiông" (酒囯英雄). He starts into the song itself at the end, just before the video cuts out. Great voice and great personality. I hope I see this guy somewhere some time.

Latest - 05/07/2013: Hualien Summer Festival's outdoor singing concert in Hualien, Taiwan.
Singing predominantly in the popular Taiwanese (Hokkien/Hoklo) songs. Hope to share this good video relating to Taiwanese (Hokkien) concert. This confirmed that Taiwanese (Hokkien/Hoklo) songs are still alive everywhere in Taiwan in the main broadcast media as this concert was shown live on main TV Channel.
