I don't think "aya" is from Cantonese because I've heard it used by non-cantonese people as well. It could just be a general thing people say that's not part of any language but just an expression that was developed and people found it was something that helped them express themselves (kind of like when people want to swear when they're frustrated).

I think "aya" is the equivelant of a sigh.

it's often used in the place of "omg," "sh*t," and yeahhhhhhh.
