Go to Vietnam and you will hear too many different versions of aya, eeya, hay ya. What makes you think it's not.

We're talking about the Cantonese "aya". What makes you think it's vietnamese in origin?

Hi

I don't think "aya" is from Cantonese because I've heard it used by non-cantonese people as well. It could just be a general thing people say that's not part of any language but just an expression that was developed and people found it was something that helped them express themselves (kind of like when people want to swear when they're frustrated).

I think "aya" is the equivelant of a sigh.
