That's an excellent chance to learn Chinese! Learn a few of the basics of Chinese, and if you're really interested buy a textbook and study hard. Chinese people are very supportive of foreigners trying to learn, and you'll make friends fast.
My website has a few basic lessons you can learn- at the present it will only help but so much, but it might be a place for you to start!
