Vietnamese-Cantonese Surname Question

Post by Eric »

I would like to know the traditional Chinese character for the Vietnamese surname (lastname) of "Duong". I was told that the name is pronounced "Young" in Cantonese.
I may be asking a simple question that has a complicated answer... but any information would be greatly appreciated!

Dear Eric,
The surname Duong is 楊 (Mand: yang2; Cant: joeng4). It means “willow”. It is the same surname as the co-founder of Yahoo, Jerry Yang.
Here is the character as a graphic (since you might not have Chinese encoding) and a link to a definition.
Note: joeng is pronounced yeung.

I think Kobo-Daishi's answer of the 'poplar'
surname is the most likely, but there are
(at least) three other possible surnames.
