Shichahai or Shishahai

Why the same name (the Lake of Ten Pagodas in Beijing, famous for its sports school) has two different transliteration. Shichahai seems to be more frequent, but the alternate Shishahai occurs even on pages hosted in China?

Can anybody help me to resolve this puzzle?

Hi Tom,

I guess it's because the second character in 什刹海 can be pronounced either cha4 or sha1. Don't know which one is correct in this case, though ...

It should be Shishahai. sha as in sha(1)che(1) 剎車 (brake).
