Chinese languages

Hi,

I'm trying to write my name in Chinese (Mandarin). I found somewhere on the net how to write my first name but I am not so sure about my last name. Someone with a good knowledge of Putonghua please check these hanzi (simplified):

阿纳托利·替他乐福 (Anatoli Titarev)

a1 na4 tuo1 li4·ti4 ta1 le4 fu2

I wonder if the choice of the characters is OK? Can you suggest anything better? Is this correct - I don't know the rules of transliteration - if there any.

Is this OK to write foreign (non-Chinese) names in this order (first name - last name)?
Also, I noticed on a web site that a European first name was seperated from the surname with a dot (·). It's normal for Japanese but I am not sure about Chinese. Is this symbol used often in Chinese. How is entered from MS IME or NJStar Chinese WP?

Some time ago I began learning characters that are used for transliteration of non-Chinese names, in my case Latvian names. The learning system is my own, so it is not official but still I think I am on the right way. As much as I can tell from the syllables you have mentioned in your message, everything is OK with the transliteration of your name, at least you have chosen the right syllables. Unfortunately, I can not say anything else for it is not enough if you spell your name in Putonghua and indicate only pitches (tones) as, for example, "ma1" can be written with ~20 different Chinese characters. Regarding the dot. It is always used to separate first names and last names. One more thing. When transliterating, one should avoid the use of characters with bad, funny or negative meaning. The second. "Na" in male names is different than "Na" in female names. Hope I am right and my explanation helped you.

Someone ridiculed my first version of my surname, so I changed the characters. I am happy with the way my first name is spelled, I saw it on the web too. Would be be good if a Chinese person checked it too.

BTW, I think in Chinese IMHO, you have to say country, then city.
