NAME, DESIGNATION: CAI QIAN
DOB: 1761, born in Tong'an (Tóng'ān Qū / 同安区) District, Fujian Province, China
DOD: 1809
CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: 蔡牽, Cài Qiān
POJ /HOKKIEN NAME:
ANCESTRY: Minnan Hokkien from Tong'an ( Tóng'ān Qū / 同安区) District , Fujian Province, China
COUNTRY: Fujian, China
CATEGORY: Sea Merchant cum Pirates

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

• Cai Qian (1761–1809) was a Chinese sea merchant, considered by some as pirate during Qing Dynasty.
• Cai Qian was born in Tong'an District (Tóng'ān Qū / 同安区), Fujian, China in 1761.
• Facing starvation, he became a pirate in 1794.
• In 1799, Cai married a weapons expert Lin Yuyau (林玉腰) who spoke English.
• In 1802, Cai occupied Xiamen's guns bases.
• In 1804 and 1805 Cai and Tsai twice attacked Taiwan's provincial capital of Tainan but were defeated.
• In the battle of 1804, Tsai defeated the Qing fleet from Wenzhou. Within the next four years he fought many battles against Tsai and Cai, vowing to destroy their fleets.
• In January 1808, Cai Qian’s Fujian and Zhejiang admirals nearly destroyed their fleet near Hong Kong through a battle, which lasted one day and night. They succeeded in defeating their enemies, causing Qing's navy to begin fearing Tsai and Cai.
• In 1809, Cai Qian committed suicide

At the height of his power, Cai Qian and Cheung Po Tsai commanded hundreds of ships and thousands of pirates; he was Tsai's mate. They predated others on the seas of Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan Strait and came to be considered a major threat to Chinese’s Qianlong Emperor political stability. Because the British businessmen sold English guns to Tsai, the Qianlong Emperor became angry with the British. The Qianlong Emperor blamed George Macartney over this issue, leading to Chinese hostility towards the United Kingdom during the Chinese Rites controversy.

In 1799, Cai married a weapons expert who spoke English. Her expertise has been beneficial to their accumulation of wealth. Some diaries say her name was Lin Yuyau (林玉腰) and that she had lived in Fangyuan, Changhua, Taiwan.

In January 1808, Cai Qian’s Fujian and Zhejiang admirals nearly destroyed their fleet near Hong Kong through a battle, which lasted one day and night. They succeeded in defeating their enemies, causing Qing's navy to begin fearing Tsai and Cai. Cai committed suicide by shooting himself with a golden bullet. It is said that Cai had a great treasure, which was hidden, on Matsu Islands: it had never been found to this day.

NAME, DESIGNATION: JI XINPENG
Date Of Birth: 30th December 1977 in Ē-mn̂g / Amoy 厦门 (Xiamen), Fujian Province

CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: 吉新鹏, Jí Xīnpéng
POJ (PE̍H-ŌE-JĪ ) NAME: -

ANCESTRY: Minnan Hokkien
COUNTRY: Ē-mn̂g / Amoy 厦门 (Xiamen), Fujian, China
CATEGORY: Sports - Badminton

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

• Ji Xinpeng who won an Olympic gold medal in men's singles at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Ji Xinpeng is the first Chinese badminton player to win an Olympic Gold Medal in men's singles badminton game.
• Ji Xinpeng was born in Ē-mn̂g / Amoy 厦门 (Xiamen), Fujian.

Having never previously captured a top tier event on the international circuit, Ji Xinpeng surprised the field at the 2000 Games in Sydney by defeating such top players as Taufik Hidayat, Peter Gade and, in the final, Hendrawan. Ji won men's singles at the Japan Open later that same year. Ji became a coach in the Chinese national badminton team in 2008.

Seventh seed Ji Xinpeng of the People's Republic of China won the men's singles final in a 15-4, 15-13 upset victory over number two seed Hendrawan of Indonesia Saturday to give China its second Badminton Olympic Gold Medal for the day. In the 45-minute second game, the classy Ji fought back from 4-9 down, then again at 10-13, winning the last five points in front of a rowdy, near-capacity crowd. He seized the game impressively, slamming in a skilled overhead smash down the sideline to Hendrawan’s feet, which had the Indonesian cramped for room. Ji started slowly in both games, but clawed his way back into control against the experienced Hendrawan, who uncharacteristically made several unforced errors at the net in an otherwise high-quality contest.

This micro-tablet contains matrix metalloprotease inhibitors which inhibit scarring and increase the success of glaucoma filtration surgery. The development of this technology is currently funded by and MRC DPFS award.
• a solid formulation methodology for antibodies and protein therapeutics delivery into the eye. This tablet provides prolonged release of the antibody therapeutics and reduces the need for repeat injections

Professor Philip Luthert, Director of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, said: “It is an extraordinary experience to see an individual clinician–scientist act as a beacon for innovation and outstanding clinical care within a specialty.

Professor Peng Khaw’s dedication to improving treatment for patients has had a marked impact on the world of ophthalmology. Integrating fundamental science with improved surgical technique, Professor Khaw has transformed the management of patients worldwide. His leadership at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital has inspired a generation of investigators. Number 38:

NAME : LIM GUAN ENG
Date Of Birth : 8th December 1960; born in Batu Pahat, Johor State

CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: 林冠英, Lín Guānyīng
POJ /HOKKIEN NAME: Lîm Kuan-ing; Lim Guan Eng
ANCESTRY: Minnan Hokkien. Ancestral village is in Zhangzhou, Fujian.
COUNTRY: Penang, Malaysia
CATEGORY: Politics, Chief Minister, Member of Parliament, State Assemblyman

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

• Lim Guan Eng is the 4th Chief Minister of the State of Penang in Malaysia
• Lim is the Secretary-General of the Malaysian Democratic Action Party (DAP).
• Lim is the son of Lim Kit Siang (former Opposition Leader of Malaysia Parliament)
Lim Kit Siang together with his son Lim Guan Eng first visited his ancestral home in China in Nov 2008 (reported in Chinapress). His ancestral village is in Zhangzhou, Fujian province which makes him a Minnan native. He met his 80+ years old brother-in-law during this visit.

Lim Guan Eng is the son of Lim Kit Siang (Leader of the Opposition in the Dewan Rakyat from 1973 to 1999 and 2004 to 2008). Guan Eng is married to Betty Chew Gek Cheng, a member of the DAP and a state assemblywoman in Malacca. He received primary education at La Salle Primary English School in Petaling Jaya, and later the Batu Pahat Montfort Primary English School. For secondary education, he went to Batu Pahat High School and Malacca High School.

Lim Guan Eng graduated from Monash University, Australia in Bachelor of Economics and was a qualified professional accountant by 1983. He was the president of MUISS (Monash University International Student Society).

Prior to his political career, Lim Guan Eng was a Bank Senior executive. Lim was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka in 1986. He was re-elected in the subsequent 1990 and 1995 general elections, albeit with reduced majority votes. He thus became the first person to be elected for three consecutive terms in Kota Melaka. He was also the first Malacca High School alumnus to achieve this.

After joining the Democratic Action Party, Lim Guan Eng was appointed as the DAP Socialist Youth Chairman in 1989 and was elected to that post in 1992. In 1995, he was elected as the DAP Deputy Secretary-General. Lim was elected as the DAP Party Secretary-General in 2004, and has held the position since.

The Malaysian police arrested Lim Guan Eng in 1994; follow his criticism on the government's handling of allegations of statutory rape in one of his constituents by former Chief Minister of the state of Melaka, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik. Consequently, while the Attorney General decided not to press charges Rahim Thamby Chik, Lim was charged under Section 4(1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for causing 'disaffection with the administration of justice in Malaysia'.

Lim Guan Eng was also charged under Section 8A (1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 for 'maliciously printing' a pamphlet containing allegedly 'false information' because he had described the alleged rape victim as an 'imprisoned victim' because she was initially detained by Malaysian police without parental consent for 10 days.

During the judicial procedure, Lim was quoted saying:
“If I fail and have to go to jail, I have no regrets. I have no regrets of going down fighting for the principles of truth and justice. And pursuit of human rights, especially women's rights. There can be no women's rights if women rape victims are considered equally responsible, and even detained, whilst the accused remain free."

— Lim Guan Eng.

After a series of appeals, Lim was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. He was, however, released after 12 months on August 25, 1999. Due to his incarceration, he was disallowed from standing for election to public office for a period of 5 years, and he was therefore ineligible to contest in the 2004 Malaysian General Election.
