我有一個問題 i am taking high school chinese 1 (i am caucasion by the way)
and i would like some tips on improving my volcabulary, i already know and recognize about 116 中文字 but according to statistics you need to know about 1,500 to be considered literate in taiwan

1500, if you're learning enough to read most texts, that is, roughly 98 percent of most everyday texts. The rare characters account for 2 percent. A dictionary is a good thing to carry with you! Don't give up.
