IT can't be done, chinese is not an alphabet. Each character has a meaning, a chinese person running across a character for the first time CANNOT sound it out. It doesn';t make sence. All across china people can read the same newspaper. But they cant necessarily speak to each other.
CHinese is wonderful, but untill you've studied it for a while.. I mean in a class room with chinese instructors... you'll likely never understand. No westerner has the background to understand chinese. It is fundamentally different in origins, structure and grammar. Heck .. they don't even have punctuation really.
Trying to get your childrens name in chinese is really meaning less. Just grab a list of the laobaixing (look it up on the web) and toss a couple pretty sounding characters after one of them.. hope they don't make an insult.

Well, your comments are right but I want to say something more.
Now linguistics believe that the various dialects of Chinese derived from the "archaic Chinese" spoken in north China thousands of years ago.
It is true that many modern dialects are mutually unintelligible, however, there are clear connections among them, phenologically and morphologically. In fact, a Cantonese does not need to go to school to learn Mandarin because he will feel it easy to pick up Mandarin pronunciations and have no difficulty in accommodating a new grammar--The only thing is to do some practicing.
Virtually Chinese people depend on context to carry accurate communication. Chinese language does not usually provide detailed information about everything--time, sex, number, etc., despite it being able to do so. So if you talk in Chinese, you must memorize what you have been told....
