Writing Chinese Symbols

When writing chinese symbols, should one write them as if one was drawing shapes, and then shade them in? The reason I am asking this is because I looked up some chinese symbols and they all look like they cannot be written, but rather drawn and then shaded in. Either that, or they require a special kind of pen to be written.
