the word "except"

Post by Steven »

How do you say "except" in cantonese. like " we use these plates except on holidays" or "they're all going to the party except me."

Also, I wanted to ask how do you use the word "fan dui" (to disagree)? Do you say "ngo fan dui" like I disagree?

Thanks

1. cui4 zo2 除鰦, except. 鰦is not the correct character but many cantonese use it.

2. faan2 dui3 反對, to object, disagree

yup,

chui-jo means except. Note that it is used at the beginning of a phrase: Chui-jo gaa-kei, ngo-dei hai yung li-di dip ga//except on holidays, we use these plates.

"ngo fan-dui" is absolutely correct. This verb actually means "to object." There is another verb to express "to agree/disagree" : "tung-yi/m-tung-yi" respectively.

Ceoi4 zo2 gaa3 kei4 zi1 ngoi6, ngo5 dei6 . . .

Would you say 'zi1 ngoi6' is necessary, optional or wrong here ?

both of them are okay, b

the addition of 'zi1 ngoi6' makes the 'ceoi4 zo2...' sentence more complete, but it is still okay if u dont mention it.
personally, i prefer the one with 'zi1 ngoi6'. :p
