Re: Directions 往 and 向 in Penang Hokkien

The word "towards" is used as 對 in Penang Hokkien.

伊對著 Komtar 彼旁去。
He is going towards where Komtar is.

Such usage is not really heard everyday, but it is how some elderly in Penang say......

Re: Create new sub-Forum for Hokkien names?

Hi Mark Yong : The website is not "mine", in the sense that it actually belongs to a few people. Each section is owned by 1 or 2 admins but, the space is mine. In other words, it's maintained by a few people in their own sub-forum but I own the highest admin right for the entire domain. I sponsor th...

Re: Create new sub-Forum for Hokkien names?

Hi Mark Yong : This is a good idea. I am not sure if this forum is still actively in use, besides Hokkien section ? I am also working on a separate Hokkien forum in Chinese, do we want to move our discussion there ? That domain is under me, the space is sponsored by myself. Feel free to comment. I a...

Re: Rice Cooker

Exactly. I have never heard anyone saying anything that sounds similar in Malay. Frankly, I quite believe that the 1st character is 木 and it just makes so much sense.

Rice Cooker

Happy Chinese New Year ! I have been teaching "missing" Hokkien words of Penang in Facebook, I plan to collect about 300 words and publish a book. Those are words I hear from older generation but not younger. Oh, I mean to ask a question about Rice Cooker. Has anyone ever found out how Bòk-Kèng is w...

Re: Another Way Out

Hi Team: I will try talk to the director. I have been urging him to bring the play to Penang. Besides, my team will be reproducing our Hokkien play by Dec too. That is 70% in Hokkien with Mandarin, we try to picture the broken gap between generations by the usage of language in the play. As I left, ...

Re: Another Way Out

Hi SimL: The title is <Tuā-Thâu Ka Huan-Tsû-Thâu>. You can refer to this link for the synopsis. http://www.visionkl.com/event/tuah-thou-huan-chu-thou-big-head-potato-head The script was written in English. Actors and actresses use their own way to remember each line. They went through every line wit...

Another Way Out

Hi All: Just some sharing not related to language study of Hokkien. I just came back from Kuala Lumpur yesterday. I went down with my drama team (Yes, I am a part-time stage actor) to attend the ADA Drama Award, the only Chinese award ceremony that recognises pure drama performances held in Malaysia...

Re: A site teaching Hokkien

How do you explain the taiwanese sayings such as 'phai sing tay' etc which are not used in MY/SG ? Wait a minute, I rarely hear "phi khi" in Penang. It's always been "seng te" in my variant. Do most people say "phi khi" in your area ? Ask around Penang, it's at least 80% as "seng te", at least amon...

Re: Malaysian/Singaporen Hokkien foreign malay words

Worked on my Malay a little yesterday and it occurred to me, could Hokkien "cim" come from or be related to Malay "cium"? "Tsim" is widely used in China and Taiwan but there was no absolute character for it. Some use 唚 to record it, and some 斟. It is very likely a loanword from Malay. Have you chec...

Re: Benzi/Original character

Sorry, but I don't quite understand what's the meaning of 予及 or 蠶叢及魚鳧 ? Please enlighten me. I am not an expert on classical chinese. 予及汝 = I and you - 予、余,我也。 蠶叢及魚鳧 = 蠶叢 and 魚鳧 - names of 2 emperors in ancient 蜀國 Finally, I also mentioned 及 sound is 'kip' and not 'ka' (whether glottal or non glott...

Re: Benzi/Original character

Since aokh is in Xiamen, he is the best person to tell us whether Ka spoken in China is with a glottal or non glottal stop. I never heard Ka (and) with a glottal stop anywhere, and like what Andrew said, I never read it anywhere that it came with a glottal stop. The reason I questioned this argumen...
