Re: dialogs for learning Hoklo w/ a tutor

Of course. What I mean is that since [l] and [d] are allophonic (same phoneme) in Hoklo, they should be written with one and the same letter. That reminds me my tutor does say "Dí" and "Dîm" for "Lí" 李 and "Lîm" 林, but 劉 "Lâu" is also "Lâu"... And the abscense of nasalization on her speech doesn't ...

Thanks Sim. What about the vocabulary? Does it sound pretty much Penang to you?

Re: Some new PDF's I've found

Thanks Ah-bin! Didn't know the whole book was available online... I knew that book because limkianhui from 鹭水芗南 made an Amoy version of the sentences in the back of that book. The Japanese column is indeed very bookish, but I'm sure the Hokkien one is of great value. I wonder if they still use these...

Re: Sentences in Hokkien/Foochow/Hakka/Ami/Atayal/Bunun/Puyu

I have a Paiwan-Mandarin dictionary you might like. It's in a box in my mother's garage in New Zealand never being looked at, but I will be back at Christmas to get rid of many things. It didn't have so many words but had example sentences for each word. Wow. Please let me know when you drop by the...

Re: How do I use hán-kiânn 罕行?

Thanks for the explanations amhoanna. And thanks for confirming it, niuc. A new expression added to my vocabulary, although I'm not sure if I'll ever have an opportunity to actually use it, since I'm the one who visit Taiwanese people and not the opposite... I heard "kiú-kiàn, kiú-kiàn" or "ch(i)ok ...

澎湖話 Penghu dialect

A few weeks ago, I found these children materials for Penghu dialect from Taiwan.

http://study.phc.edu.tw/language/

Very different from the typical Taiwanese accent and intonation (or maybe it's the way they read the texts that makes it sound funny)... They use lú 汝 and boh 欲/卜

Re: Penang Hokkien lessons

I think I had come across Tim's website before, but I don't remember having seen such well laid out lessons with audio and tone marks before. Seems like they're pretty much recent. They're really nice. I'm not going to learn Penang Hokkien now, but passive learning isn't a bad idea, I guess! B...

Penang Hokkien lessons

Last weekend, I found this wonderful resource for Penang Hokkien on FB. He uses his own romanization, but it's very easy to understand and he does indicate the tones unlike those books by Choon Hoe Tan. http://www.penang-traveltips.com/penang-hokkien.htm https://www.facebook.com/groups/learnpenangho...

Re: Sentences in Hokkien/Foochow/Hakka/Ami/Atayal/Bunun/Puyu

Wow! How long have you lived in Taiwan? Actually I've been long interested in Paiwan, but had never found anything in English until I came across that. Since I had to drop Pangasinan 'cos my tutor got a new job and National Library of Australia lost their copy of "Spoken Pangasinan" I was getting a ...

Re: Singaporean Movie: It's a great great world (toā-sè-kài

Thanks, Sim! I'm now using the idle time while I wait some experiments from my coursework to finish to reply here  "Mandarinization" [...] was driven by the Chinese themselves. So that's the typical 20th century way of thinking: "I'm not going to pass on our mother tongue 'cos I want my kid...

Re: 200 sentences in 6 Hakka dialects from Taiwan

I'd be tempted to learn one of those dialects as well, but I guess it'd be too hard to find speakers. I had someone online to help me with Hoiliuk before, but he disappeared. Since I already have a few materials for Siyen (even a Little Prince bought by mistake) and all Hakkas I know (also the old l...

Re: How do I use hán-kiânn 罕行?

The usage is much like LONG TIME NO SEE but it can only be used by the person who's on their home turf, in reference to someone who's not. Oh, now it makes sense to me why they translated it that way in Japanese  Thanks! The quality of editing for this dictionary was incredibly high. I kne...
