Wu (吳語)  is spoken primarily in Shanghai, Zhejiang province and part of Jiangsu province south of the Yangtze river. The Suzhou dialect formed the basis of Shanghainese . The vairant of Northern Wu are mutually intelligible, while those of Southern Wu are not.
