Hokkien Language Forum
Hokkien Language Forum
There are more than 49 million Chinese who belong to the Hokkien or Minnan language group i.e. the 21st largest language group in the world. There is growing interest in this language particularly with the inevitable trend that it would be one of the official languages of Taiwan where more that 75% of the population belong to this language group. The Hokkiens also form the largest Chinese dialect group in Singapore, Malaysia and the Phillippines. I am sure many Hokkiens would be interested to know more about this language particularly on ways to arrest its rapid declining influence as a medium of communication in their homes and the Chinese community generally. Therefore, I would like to suggest the establishment of a separate Hokkien Language Forum for this purpose. Thank you.

Dear Yeo,
Perhaps you should e-mail the forum administrator directly. I'm not sure if he reads the postings at the forums.
Are you sure you want another forum? The Hakka forum is filled with questions by people asking for characters for tattoos. There's nothing Hakka specific.
Kobo-Daishi, PLLA.

Re: Hokkien Language Forum
Dear Kobo-Daishi,
Thanks for your advice. I will email the forum administrator directly. It would interesting to see the response of the Chinese Hokkiens particularly on issues related to their language which is being increasingly neglected by the Hokkiens themselves and totally discriminated by TV channels in Malaysia and Singapore eventhough Hokkiens constitute the largest Chinese dialect group in those 2 countries.

Kobo-Daishi,
You're right. The only posts on the Hakka forum are people asking what their names are in Chinese, or asking for tattoos, and so on. Nothing really relates to Hakka. The same thing might happen if a Hokkien forum was added.
But, you never know.

Re: Hokkien Language Forum
Dear Mun,
Since you are in Malaysia, what language do you speak? English, Malay, a Chinese dialect other than Fujian Hua?
I understand that they now offer Mandarin courses in government-run schools to increase enrollment. Is this true?
Are you Malay or ethnic Chinese?

Dear Mun,
I suggest you log in to www.coastalfog.net/languages and pick your choice of different Chinese languages/dialects. For Hokkien dialect, choose the Taiwanese (Holo/Minnan) language which is to a large extent similar to that used in Malaysia.
Best regards,
BHYeo

dear Kobo-Daishi
i am ethic chinese in malaysia. i speak english , malay , cantonese , and a little mandarin. but i am sorry cos i am not aware of the news; well not that i am aware of. by right POL (people's own language) classes should be implemented. however, the system wasn't structured to be like that. i think mandarin claases is only held when there is a great response from a large group of students with the extra initiative from the school itself. =D
thanx BHYeo for the recommendation. i find the website very interesting. kinda like my cup of tea. hehe. thanx anyway. i will bookmark it.
