Sandhi rules
I was just wondering - do 去 and 起 really have the same sandhi in Pg Hokkien, and if so how would anyone tell them apart, apart from context?
Re: Sandhi rules
Does khì sandhi in compounds, I wonder? I can only think of
Khì-khùn去睏 – to go to bed
But I'm not sure whether the first one sandhis or not, or if verbs like khùn 睏 make the verbs in front of them sandhi. As far as places go, I suppose it could be ambiguous, but the place would make it clear. Khì bus ê ūi (go to where the bus is) vs. khí bus (get on the bus).
Whereas khí has many meanings and in the senses of "build" and "ascend" and "start feeling/going" (of feelings or mental states) it takes direct objects and sandhis.
Khí-lâu 起樓 – to build a building
Khí-siān 起閑 – to sick of, or get fed up of something
Khí-siáu 起痟 – to go crazy, go nuts
Khí-tâng 起童 – to be possessed by a deity, said of a thiàu-tâng
Khí-thiⁿ 起天 – to go to Heaven
The verbal suffixes lai 來 and khi 去 don't make the verb sandhi, and khi 去 (neutral tone) is never used with the main verb khì 去 anyway.
This is just my feeling from what i have heard....not being a native speaker I couldn't possibly give an authoritative comment.
