Hokkien treet names

Post by Andrew Yong »

I found two articles on Penang street names (the third article P-Z hasn't been published yet. I've tried to put the hanzi for each street, and posted it for anyone interested. Some probably incorrect, and most are guesses.

I am not a fan of this hanzi for 'lang': I don't think there is enough agreement on the proper hanzi; I have seen people use ?z. I prefer to use 'jin'.

My source says "Beng Sarn Lor T'au ( (at the) Head of Beng San Road) - China Street Ghaut. Khoo Beng San, a merchant, had a shop there (Lo Man Yuk). Also called Tuar Kay Lor T'au, see below"

Ban-san is the normal Penang word for market, but some people say that it is a borrowed word. Is that the proper hanzi?

"Tuarn Losin (Tuan Losin Street) - Beach Street between Armenian Street and Acheen Street; named after Tengku Syed Hussein who owned most of the houses in this part of the road (Lo Man Yuk). "

> 祭祀街 che-ti-ke? Chettiar street, Penang St (S of Market St)

"Lor Lin Kay (Noordin Street, so-called after the business premises of Mr H M Noordin) - Chulia Street between Beach Street and Pitt Street. Cantonese Yi Siong Kai (Clothes Box Street: from the cabinet makers shops there) (Lo Man Yuk)"

Kong Hock Koo Harng (Kong Hock Koo Lane, The Penang Mutual Improvement Association Lane) - Market Lane. In Cantonese Yee Nai Hong (Concubine Lane, so called because this lane used to be occupied chiefly by kept women). (Lo Man Yuk)

Probably therefore 共福??巷

> ??厝前 leng-chiah-chhu-cheng id.

"Koo K'ar Koo (The Old Jail, the old Criminal Prison, which was formerly situated at the present vacant piece of land opposite the Chowrasta market) - Penang Road about Chowrasta market where a prison was located. Also Laing Chiark Ch'oo Chaing (Lo Man Yuk) This was the Island's second jail.(Chang Yong-Me) See Kuarn Lau Ar, below."

I don't know what the meaning could be.

Both Keng Kwee and Ah Kwee are the name of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee.

> 油家路 iu-ka-lO (oil mill road), Madras Lane

Should be 油?路

Lu-song is obviously a borrowed word - probably from Luzon? The church in question is Armenian.

My source has

"Karm Kong Lai (In the Village) - Carnarvon Lane There was once a kampong in this locality (Lo Man Yuk)

Karm Kong Lai Hoay Lor (Carnarvon Street Cross Street0) - To Aka Lane. Also P'ar T'ee Kay Harng Ar. (Lo Man Yuk)

Hi Andrew,

Nice topic.

My family's ancestral home in Penang is in Love Lane, and in our family we referred to it as "siEn1-i3-hang3". My father tells me that "siEn-i" (or "siEn-ni") is a "corruption" of "serani", meaning Eurasian. Apparently this term arose because of the Catholic convent and church nearby - many Eurasians were brought up in Catholic "orphanages" and went to the Catholic schools and church in the area. My father also claims that "hang" means "behind", but I don't know how accurate this is.

Furthermore, one of the family homes before the Second World War was in Malay Street, which my father tells me was called (as you mention in your posting) "thai-gu-au", meaning "behind the place where the cows were slaughtered". However, I seem to recall my father saying that he never actually saw any cows being led to slaughter, or carcasses being taken away, when he was living there as a child.

Sim,
Your father doesn't know haniz if I am not mistaked.hang is mandarin xiang = 巷 .If you type this hanzi and select mandarin in online dict you will get hang a for small street and hang a khau/thau for port/harbor etc.

Hi Hong,

Quite right, my father knows even less Mandarin than I do! Thanks for the explanation on "hang".

On the subject of "sia4 boi4"...

I have often seen Chinese shops signs in Penang referring to the old Prangin Road market area "sia4 boi2" written as 社尾. If Khoo Su Nin's description that the term means "town's end" (in her book "Streets of Penang") is correct, then "sia4" should be 城, not 社. Anyway, the word 社 is pronounced in the 2nd tone (i.e. much higher) and means "society", not "town".

I always thought the end of Weld Quay was called ang teng kak 紅燈角. However, on my recent trip there, I noticed there were several houses and stone markers with the words 土橋尾 (t'or8 kio5 boi2, or "end of the soil bridge"). Any ideas? Any relation to the kio5 boi2 referring to Noordin Street Ghaut as mentioned?

I have often heard of "cemetery" being called "bong8" - what is the Hanzi for it? At first, I thought it was 塚 (as seen on the signboard 福健公塚 in Tanjung Tokong), but it appears I am wrong.

Still fumbling with the tone numbers... learning, learning...

墓 is baidu bong7.Even leading experts have problem about tone. Some say 1 million chuanchiu city people have 8 tones but some say only 7.Some say 6 tones for huian, jinjiang, etc. It is very hard.
