Learning to read and write!!!!

Can anyone suggest some good websites to practice reading chinese characters, nothing to difficult, even childrens websites. I'm learning how to read and write, but I'm finding it very diffuclt to continiously read those boring grammer texts. I'm reading at about a grade 4 level.
Also, is anyone else trying to learn how to read and write, but yet they live in a north amercian country? I'm finding it diffiuclt when I'm not totally emersed in the language!
Sorry, one other thing, what's the best way to improve speaking vocabulary?
