Re: The 7 tones - Recordings?
Thank you for the helpful responses everyone. Ah-bin has sent me a recording of the tones. I'm curious though, do the tones really vary that much from dialect to dialect, for example Penang to Amoy, that no recording would work for every dialect (or at least most of them)? I know that words are goin...

The 7 tones - Recordings?
I made a a thread like this last year and got some very helpful responses: http://www.chineselanguage.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8733&p=29932#p29932 I'd like to get back into Amoy Hokkien and I just have a question about the tones. The thing is I don't have a clue how to pronounce any of...

Re: 2 questions - vertical line above letters, plus tones
Wow... that's super confusing, haha. So the names of the tones don't mean anything, neither do the IPA symbols. Great success? Lol. Can I listen to recordings of the tones anywhere? If not, might anyone here be troubled to grab their mic and record the tones for me, so I can hear exactly how they ar...

Re: 2 questions - vertical line above letters, plus tones
When you say 51 and 21, do you mean the word is pronounced with a combination of tone 5 and tone 1, or tone 2 and tone 1? Or does that mean something else? :\ Sorry, I'm a total beginner. Edit: I just read that the acute accent is used for tone 2 (yin rising) and the vertical bar for tone 8 (yang en...

2 questions - vertical line above letters, plus tones
Hey I have a quick question about a certain character used in the POJ romanization. Let's take for example the word for chemistry, hòa-ha̍k. According to wiktionary, the second 'a' has a little vertical line above it, but my dictionary gives the word as hòa-hák, that is, with an accute accent rather...

Re: Variant of Amoy spoken in Fujian province - Resources??
Bodman specifically teaches the Amoy variant. It is just the dialogues that are set in Malaya. Occasionally he points out how the Amoy variant is different from that spoken in south Malaya/Singapore. The north Malaya variant is largely ignored. Really? Okay, well that sounds good. Well I guess I sh...

Re: Variant of Amoy spoken in Fujian province - Resources??
Thank you for the informative response. So, if I wanted to learn "standard" Amoy, then a book on the Malaya variant (be it either Quanzhou or Zhangzhou) is not a good idea, am I correct? Hmm, tough situation here... It really depends on where you want to use it. For foreigners ie. non nat...

Variant of Amoy spoken in Fujian province - Resources??
Hey everyone, So I've had my eye on Spoken Amoy Hokkien by Nicholas Bodman (http://www.amazon.com/Spoken-Amoy-Hokkien-2-Set/dp/0879504501) and another forum member told me that it was a good resource... for the variant of the language spoken in Malaya. 6 decades ago. Are there are any books or resou...
