MayebI am wrong, but I always thought that Ph sounds like a soft P, therefore resembling a B?

Re: Pronunciation of some characters

Thank you. I guess that wraps it up with the exception of 穫 and 璧. I suddenly realized I know this last character from my Dutch East-Indies ancestors. There it was written as Bik, which means it leans towards the POJ spelling of Phek. I will use that one, unless something cmes up from this forum. Ye...

Re: Pronunciation of some characters

With my last post, I forgot to add the chinese characters. That of course, is rather senseless  Amhoanna, you sent me an e-mail? I am afraid I did not receive it. So again: 閔 bín bun5 叔 chek siok 奎 ke kui 吳 gô͘ ngô͘ 祚 chà chò͘ 倡 chhiong chhiong3 洙 chu su5 冠 koan koàn koann 贊 chàn chān 章 chiuⁿ ...

Re: Pronunciation of some characters

Hello, Thanks to all, once again. I can wait a few more days with sending my book to the printer. I have a few days margin. Actually, I have been in the village of my origin, but the people living there couldn't tell me much more about the genealogy of my ancestors. Apparently the genealogy was reco...

Re: Pronunciation of some characters

Thanks, I really appreciate all your help. And it is amazing to meet people who are so thorough as you are. The list is getting really smaller now. I am going to put some more characters here: 俶 chhiok siok thek 瑱 chin thian3 tian5 田 chhân chhian5 tian5 tian7 與 í u5 u7 hou7 乾 kan khiân koann ta 伯 pe...

Re: Pronunciation of some characters

That's great. It really limits the options. I guess I am going to use the most common pronunciation and/or the most beautiful / positive word. Maybe some characters? thanks again, Elmer 唐 tng tông pong5 ta 曲 khek khiau khiàu khiok 寬 khoan khoaⁿ khòaⁿ khng3 天 phian phin thian thinn 樸 phok phak phoh p...

Pronunciation of some characters

Sorry if I seem to be impatient. I am struck by the genealogical virus. It seems to be without cure  Can anybody tell me what these characters would probably be pronounced like in the region between Zhangzhou city and Xiamen city: 逸: it, ek, iat? 人: jin, chhin, lang? 台: tai, thai, i? 旦: tan, to...

Re: Hokkien names?

That sounds fair. If I look to this family, I see that almost all the names contain the character 山. So it may be that this part was actually more for consistency than it had impact on the pronunciation. Thanks!

Re: Hokkien names?

Thanks, The new file is on http://www.mediafire.com/?1mm40l6dh3j9g38. One thing though, I don't think this is a shared file like on dropbox, that people can update. The character 𡹘 is problematic yes. I can only see it with certain fonts. I am 100% of 山, 90% sure of the 夂 and 50% of the 户 (you have ...

Re: Hokkien names?

Many thanks for all your support. I have in total 303 Chinese names, containing in total 589 characters, made up from 268 individual characters. That is a lot of work To create some overview, I have made a list of these 268 characters, which are linked to the names. So if I change the pronunciation ...
