Listen to it a few times - you should be able to get the gist but it is hard to hear anyone without a microphone. The interviewer is Taiwanese, the older guys are tourists from some kind of society from somewhere called peng-O in Zhangzhou. The initial conversation is about whether they have been to Taiwan before, how long they are here, what they are doing, etc. You can here Penang pronunciations in nO, E-muiN, tuiN, etc. The thing I have noticed is their o is more like O, e.g. khO-leng. The middle-aged guy seems to have a more mixed accent. The older guy at the end I can't understand at all because he seems to be speaking quite formal Chinese.
Statistics: Posted by AndrewAndrew — Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:03 am

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for posting this link. Many of the related clips are interesting too. A proliferation of Hokkien-related links are appearing, which is very nice.
Statistics: Posted by SimL — Mon Aug 16, 2010 6:26 pm

According to this youtube video, the village Shima is a village in Longhai county. The uploader puts in brackets besides Shima (Longxi). Does this mean Shima is the modern name for Longxi?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvLiPW3Ec1U
Statistics: Posted by Shawn.Lin — Mon Aug 16, 2010 12:33 pm

Hi elmer:

I am not sure which 2 characters are you referring to. Is your Longxi referring to the surname of Lee ? If that's the Longxi from the plaque hung at the top of your house's entrance, I am pretty sure you're a Mr. Lee.

Longxi, which refers to Lee, is not from Zhangzhou. Most surnames came from the North. Hokkien and Cantonese people came from the North. Longxi should be a small county in today's Gansu Province where Lee surname originated from.

This is what I understand. I am not expert.

Statistics: Posted by aokh1979 — Thu Aug 05, 2010 2:51 am

Hi,

Maybe a bit off-topic. I would like to learn what exactly was meant by Longxi in the mid 19th, early 20th century. Was it the town of Zhangzhou, was it the county just south of Zhangzhou, currently incorporated in Longhai, or was it the entire south of Fujian, including Xiamen, Zhangpu etcetera?

Who could help me with a map depicting the boundaries of the old county Longxi?

regards, Elmer
Statistics: Posted by elmer — Wed Aug 04, 2010 8:05 pm
