About the dictionary, the items are listed by pronunciation. That is, the pronunciation of leading characters in a word, phrase or sentence.

There is no English-Chinese lookup, so you can only use it for Hakka Chinese > English meaning.

The dictionary listing is alphabetical according to the sounds of Hakka. So, the sounds "a" begins the the book and sounds beginning in "y" ends the book. Alphabetical according to the romanisation used. Note the initials are (off the top of my head)

a, ch,chh, e,f,h,i,k,kh,l,m,n, ng, ny, o, p, ph, s, sh, t, th, v, y

where initial consonant b being listed as p, p as ph, d as t, t as th, g as k and k as kh etc... It needs getting used to. (I might have missed some above...)

The Hakka contained is very comprehensive, with old stuff from the classics every now and again. Because of the date it was compiled, it contains modern phrases up to the 1920's and 30's only, and modern Hakka vocabulary post-MacIver is influenced by borrowings from Cantonese and Mandarin via the media, where new items borrowed are pronounced in Hakka of course.

The dictionary keeps apart sounds which may have merged in other dialects, so you may need to search in a couple of places. For instance chh and tsh are confused in my dialect.

Cheers,

Dyl.
Statistics: Posted by Guest — Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:35 am
